Narrated 'Ali bin Abi Talib (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "If one of you comes to Salat (prayer) and the Imam is at a certain position, he must do as the Imam is doing." [Reported by at-Tirmidhi with a weak chain of narrators].

Takhrij:
This hadith establishes that a follower who joins the prayer late should join the imam in whatever position he finds him.
If the imam is in bowing (ruku‘), then the follower should also say "Allahu Akbar" and go into bowing. If he finds the imam in prostration (sujud), he should say "Allahu Akbar" and go into prostration. And if the imam is sitting, then the latecomer (masbuq) should also sit in that position.
Although this narration from Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi is weak in its chain, this issue is supported by other authentic ahadith.
