Hadith 339

وعن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : « صلوا على من قال لا إله إلا الله وصلوا خلف من قال لا إله إلا الله ». رواه الدارقطني بإسناد ضعيف.
Narrated Ibn 'Umar (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Pray (funeral prayers) over him who said (believed): 'Nothing deserves to be worshiped except Allah'; and pray behind him who says: 'Nothing deserves to be worshiped except Allah'." [ad-Daraqutni reported it through a weak chain of narrators].

«أخرجه الدارقطني: 2 /56.* عثمان بن عبدالرحمن وخالد بن إسماعيل المخزومي مجروحان متروكان.»©Explanation:
➊ This hadith proves that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for a sinful person who professes the testimony of faith (kalimah) is valid. Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah holds this view, but he does not consider the funeral prayer for a highway robber or a rebel to be valid.
➋ Scholars and pious individuals should not perform the funeral prayer for an open sinner (fasiq wa fajir) or for someone who has committed suicide.
➌ The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not perform the funeral prayer for a person who had committed suicide; however, he instructed the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum, saying, "Go, you perform his funeral prayer."
