Lexical Explanation:
«بَابُ الْوُضُوءِ» with a dammah on the "waw" is a verbal noun. Linguistically, it means: to wash the extremities such as the hands and feet in an unrestricted manner. And in the Shari'ah, its meaning is: the act of ablution (wudu), which is well-known and recognized. If "wudu" is read with a fathah on the "waw," then its meaning is the water present in a vessel with which ablution (wudu) is performed.

«لَوْ لَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ» means that if I had not feared that I would put my ummah into hardship and difficulty.

«لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ» then I would have certainly commanded them, meaning I would have made it obligatory. And refraining from issuing a command for the purpose of removing hardship necessitates that using the tooth-stick (miswak) be considered recommended (mustahabb), and even more emphatically so.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that whenever ablution (wudu) is performed, using the tooth-stick (miswak) is recommended (mustahabb). It is narrated in Sahih Muslim and Abu Dawud that using the tooth-stick (miswak) cleanses the mouth and pleases one's Lord. [صحيح مسلم، الطهارة، باب السواك، حديث : 252، وسنن أبى داود، الطهارة، حديث : 4746]
➋ The tooth-stick (miswak) is the sunnah of all the Prophets and Messengers.
➌ In Musnad Ahmad, Ibn Khuzaymah, Hakim, and Daraqutni, etc., it is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha that the reward of the prayer performed after using the tooth-stick (miswak) is seventy times greater than the prayer performed without using it. Although this narration is weak in its chain, its weakness is removed due to other supporting evidences, and thus it has been declared authentic. For details, see: [تخريج صلاة الرسول، حافظ عبدالرؤف]
➍ If one is already in a state of ablution (wudu), then before performing the prayer, one should use the tooth-stick (miswak) so that the aforementioned virtue may be attained and the requirement of following the sunnah may be fulfilled.
