Hadith 275

Narrated 'Umar (RA): He said, "O people! We pass (in our recitation) verses to be prostrated at, so whoever prostrates has done the right thing, and there is no sin upon the one who does not prostrate." [al-Bukhari reported it]. It also contains the words: 'Allah the Most High has not made the prostration (of recitation) compulsory, unless one wishes (to do so).' [This Hadith is in the Muwatta' of Imam Malik).

Explanation:
➊ In some versions, instead of the plural form "an nashā’a," it is also transmitted as "an yashā’a."
That is, the reciter has a choice.
And in obligatory (fard) and compulsory (wajib) acts, no choice is given.
➋ Umar radi Allahu anhu said this in the presence of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum.
All the listening Companions remained silent.
This establishes the proof of silent consensus (ijma’ sukuti); furthermore, "lam yufrid" and "an yashā’a" also further support this.
Among the four Imams, this is the position of Imam Malik and Imam Shafi’i rahimahumallah; likewise, the scholars of Ahl al-Hadith also consider the prostration of recitation (sujud al-tilawah) to be only recommended (sunnah), but the Hanafis consider it obligatory (wajib).
