«أخرجه مسلم، المساجد، باب سجود التلاوة، حديث:578.»©Explanation:
➊ This hadith establishes the legitimacy (mashru‘iyyah) of the prostration of recitation (sajdat al-tilawah).
There is consensus among all scholars regarding its legitimacy, but there is a difference of opinion concerning its obligation.
The majority of scholars hold the view that the prostration of recitation is recommended (masnun), not obligatory (wajib), whereas Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah says that it is obligatory.
➋ There is also a difference of opinion regarding the number of prostrations in the Qur’an.
Imam al-Shafi‘i rahimahullah says that there is no prostration of recitation in Surah Sad and in the mufassal surahs.
Thus, according to him, their total number is eleven.
This hadith goes against his view; however, according to Imam al-Shafi‘i rahimahullah’s later opinion, he holds that there are fourteen prostrations.
(Nayl al-Awtar: 3/109) And Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah states that there are fourteen prostrations, including those in the mufassal surahs.
He does not accept the second prostration in Surah al-Hajj.
And according to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah, there are a total of fifteen, including both prostrations in Surah al-Hajj.
The position of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah appears to be weightier and more preferable.
