Hadith 261

Narrated Jabir (RA): The saying of the Prophet (ﷺ) to a sick person who prayed on a cushion: The Prophet (ﷺ) threw it away and said, "Pray on the ground, if you are able to do so; otherwise, pray by gesturing signs and make your prostration lower than your bowing." [al-Baihaqi reported it through a strong chain of narrators, but Abu Hatim regarded it as Mauquf (saying of a Companion)].

Takhrij:
➊ The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain of transmission by our esteemed researcher; however, its meaning is correct.
Therefore, if due to some matter it becomes difficult to do otherwise, then the one praying should suffice with gestures only; however, a distinction should be made between the gesture for prostration (sujud) and the gesture for bowing (ruku‘).
The gesture for prostration should be somewhat lower compared to that of bowing.
➋ This hadith also shows that a person’s connection with his Creator and Master should never be severed in any circumstance or at any moment.
At every instant, His remembrance should be deeply rooted in the heart and mind.
This is the true station of servitude (‘ubudiyyah).
