Narrated Thauban (RA): Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) finished his prayer, he used to say after asking Allah's forgiveness three times: "O Allah, You are as-Salam (One Free from every defect), and as-Salam (safety from every evil) is (sought) from You. Blessed are You, O Possessor of glory and honour." [Reported by Muslim].

«أخرجه مسلم، المساجد، باب استحباب الذكر بعد الصلاة....، حديث:591.»©Explanation:
➊ The desirability (istihbab) of the supplications (adhkar) of prayer is established from this hadith.
The seeking of forgiveness (istighfar) by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was out of gratitude and for the purpose of teaching, whereas the seeking of forgiveness by the believers in prayer is to make up for any deficiencies or excesses; furthermore, this seeking of forgiveness is also due to the occurrence of distractions (waswas) and stray thoughts.
➋ Due to the requirements of human nature, any deficiency, excess, or distraction that may have occurred in the prayer, we request forgiveness and pardon for it.
This is precisely the demand of servitude (‘ubudiyyah): that the servant should remain a seeker of pardon from his Lord.
➌ How did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam seek forgiveness? Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has mentioned in Al-Adhkar that Imam Awza‘i was asked: “What was the seeking of forgiveness of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?” He replied that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to recite «أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰہَ ‘ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰہَ ‘ أَسْتَغْفِرُاللّٰہَ».
➍ The very phrases of supplication mentioned in this hadith are the ones that are prescribed (masnun) to be recited.
Some people did not remain content with this, but rather added from themselves and altered it, for example: they added to this supplication as follows: “Allahumma anta as-salam wa minka as-salam wa ilayka yarji‘u as-salam, hayyina rabbana bis-salam, tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram,” and so on.
➎ This addition is not transmitted anywhere in the hadith; rather, it is an insertion from oneself and is akin to “patching sackcloth onto silk.”
