Hadith 203

وعنها قالت : رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم يسترني وأنا أنظر إلى الحبشة يلعبون في المسجد . . . الحديث . متفق عليه
Narrated ['Aishah (RA)]: I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at the door of my house screening me while I watched some Abyssinians (Ethiopians) who were playing in the mosque... (the narration). [Agreed upon].

203 Lexical Explanation:
«يَسْتُرُنِ» "You had concealed me" means that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was standing at the door of the chamber of Aisha radi Allahu anha, and Aisha radi Allahu anha was standing behind him watching the play of the Abyssinians.
«اَلْحَبَشَةِ» is the plural of «حبشي», meaning the inhabitants of the land of Abyssinia.
«يَلْعَبُونَ» In grammar, this sentence is in the state of "hal" related to "Habasha" (Abyssinia). The narrations clarify that their play involved spears and shields and that it was the day of Eid. This type of play is a form of military exercise. The demonstration of such military exercises in the mosque is permissible. It is not correct to deduce from this that all types of play are absolutely permissible.
Benefits and Issues:
➊ This hadith is evidence that on days of happiness, the demonstration of martial skills in the mosque is permissible.
➋ A woman may look at a non-mahram man in a general way, but not in detail; that is, she may not closely observe the body parts of a non-mahram man. On such occasions, the purpose is to watch the play, not the players themselves. Furthermore, it is necessary that the man's body is covered.
➌ In the present era, generally, the bodies of those who play are semi-naked, and along with this, there are other Shariah prohibitions as well; therefore, it is necessary to avoid such (modern) games.
