Narrated [Abu Hurairah (RA)]: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Whoever hears a man crying out in the mosque about something he has lost, he should say, 'May Allah not restore it to you', for the mosques were not built for this." [Reported by Muslim].

Lexical Explanation:
«يَنْشُدُ» "Ya" with a fatha and "sheen" with a damma. It is on the pattern of «نصر ينصر». It means to search and seek, or to announce loudly in order to search.
«ضَالَّةً» means a lost animal. This is its original meaning, and then by analogy, it is also used for non-animals.
«لَا رَدَّهَا اللهُ عَلَيْكَ» Apparently, this contains "la" of negation and is applied to the negation of an action. In reality, it is a supplication (bad-dua) against the one searching for the lost item, meaning: may Allah not return to him the thing he is searching for, because he is committing an act in the mosque which is not permissible in this place.
«لَمْ تُبْنَ» is in the passive form, meaning: mosques have not been constructed for this purpose.
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The rebuke and clarification in this hadith is intended to prevent people from, when something of theirs is lost outside, coming into the mosque and starting to search for it there. This is against the etiquette of the mosque.
➋ Nowadays, the abundance of announcements in mosques is also in need of reform; however, it is permissible to stand at the door of the mosque and inquire from those coming and going.
➌ In this hadith, the animal is mentioned specifically because animals do not get lost by coming into mosques, so what is the meaning of searching for them here?
