وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : « إذا وطىء أحدكم الأذى بخفيه فطهورهما التراب » . أخرجه أبو داود وصححه ابن حبان.
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "If one of you steps on filth with his two leather socks then the earth is their purification." [Reported by Abu Dawud, and Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (authentic)].

Lexical Explanation:
«وَطِيءَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْأَذٰي» means to trample impurity with one’s feet and to pass over it and walk on it. «وَطِيءَ» is from the chapter «سَمِعَ يَسْمَعُ».
«بِخُفَيْهِ» is the dual form of “khuff” (leather socks), which is annexed to the pronoun. In this, “ba” is a preposition. This and the previously mentioned hadith indicate that shoes, leather socks (khuffayn), and other similar items become pure by rubbing them on clean earth, whether the impurity is dry or wet.
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Our researcher has declared the mentioned narration weak in its chain, however, its meaning is correct. Most likely for this reason, Imam Ibn Hibban rahimahullah and Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah have declared it authentic. Therefore, if any kind of impurity gets on shoes or leather socks, whether it is dry or wet, visible or invisible, light or heavy, they become pure and clean by rubbing them well on clean earth. There is no need to wash them, provided that the shoes are even from below and filth does not get stuck in them.
➋ The position of Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah is contrary to this; however, the Hanafis have accepted the position of Imam Shafi’i rahimahullah as correct.
➌ According to Imam Shafi’i rahimahullah and, in one narration, Imam Ahmad rahimahullah also held the same opinion: whether the impurity is dry or wet, simply rubbing the shoe or leather sock (khuff) well on the ground makes it pure and clean; there is no need to wash and purify it with water.
