Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "The Mu'adhdhin has more right to [determine the time to] announce the Adhan and the Imam has more right to [determine when to] pronounce the Iqamah." [Reported by Ibn 'Adi who graded it Da'if (weak)]. al-Baihaqi has reported a similar narration from the saying of 'Ali (RA).

Lexical Explanation:
«رَوَاهُ ابْنُ عَدِيٍّ وَضَعَّفَهُ» Ibn ‘Adi has declared it weak on the basis that only Sharik Qadi narrates it alone. However, Ibn Ma‘in has said that Sharik is truthful (saduq), trustworthy (thiqah). But if he opposes others, then another narrator is more preferable to us than him. And Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah said: «لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسَ» “There is no harm in him.” And Imam Ahmad rahimahullah said: He is intelligent and truthful (saduq). Imam Muslim rahimahullah has narrated from him in corroboration (mutaba‘atan).

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Our esteemed researcher has declared the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu to be weak in its chain, and regarding the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu, he writes that its chain is authentic; therefore, the issue mentioned in the aforementioned narration is correct.
➋ The mu’adhdhin (caller to prayer) has greater right to give the adhan (call to prayer) because he has been made the guardian of the time of adhan; therefore, the mu’adhdhin should fulfill this responsibility properly. And the imam has greater right to the iqamah (pronouncement of the commencement of prayer), meaning that the iqamah should not be pronounced without his indication and permission.
