Narrated Abu Qatadah (RA) in a long Hadith about their (Sahaba) sleeping late past the time of Salat (prayer): Then Bilal proclaimed the Adhan and the Prophet (ﷺ) offered the prayer (while leading the Companions) as he used to do every day. [Reported by Muslim]. Muslim also reported from Jabir (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ) came to al-Muzdalifah and offered at it both the Maghrib and 'Isha prayers with one Adhan and two Iqamah. Muslim also reported from Ibn 'Umar (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ) combined the Maghrib and 'Isha prayers with one Iqamah. Abu Dawud added the words: "for each prayer". And in another narration he reported: The Adhan was not announced for any one of them.

Lexical Explanation:
«فِي نَوْمِهِمْ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ» The incident of sleeping pertains to the Fajr prayer. The nature of the incident is such that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was returning from Khaybar and camped somewhere during the last part of the night. He instructed Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu to stay awake so that when Fajr appeared, he could wake him up. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam fell asleep, and Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu, being overcome by sleep, also fell asleep. Thus, when they woke up after sunrise and observed this situation, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered them to leave that valley. (In compliance with this command) all the Companions left that valley (and camped at another place ahead). Then, according to the command of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu gave the call to prayer (adhan), and he (the Prophet) led the prayer.

«مُزْدَلِفَة» This is the name of a place located between Mina and Arafat. Spending the night there between the 9th and 10th of Dhul-Hijjah is among the rites of Hajj. After standing in Arafat, on the night beginning the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, the pilgrims come to this place.

«وَلَمْ يُنَادِ فِي وَاحِدَةٍ مِّنْهُمَا» For neither of these two was a caller (adhan) proclaimed.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this hadith, it is established that if a missed prayer is performed in congregation, then giving the adhan for it is prescribed.

➋ The second hadith of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma and the first hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu are mutually contradictory, because the hadith of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma negates giving the adhan in the case of combining Maghrib and Isha during the stay at Muzdalifah, whereas the narration of Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu establishes that one adhan and two iqamahs were given. The hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu is stronger. Furthermore, in the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma, there is a negation of the adhan, and in the hadith of Jabir, there is affirmation of it. And the affirmative narration takes precedence over the negative one.
