Lexical Explanation:
«اَلشَّفَقُ الْحُمْرَةُ» By "shafaq" is meant that redness which appears on the horizon of the sky immediately after sunset. In the commentary of Bulugh al-Maram, "Subul al-Salam," it is stated that this is a lexical discussion and for this, reference will be made to the scholars of language. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma was among the scholars of language and was a pure Arab; therefore, according to the statement of Imam Ibn Khuzaymah rahimahullah, although this narration is mawquf, it is nevertheless a proof and evidence in explaining the meaning of "shafaq." In the famous lexicon "al-Qamus" as well, it is stated that by "shafaq" is meant that redness which appears in the sky after sunset and remains until 'Isha or near 'Isha or until near darkness.
Benefits and Issues:
➊ By "shafaq" is meant that redness which appears after the sun has set.
➋ All the Imams and scholars of language are agreed upon this definition, except that Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah alone holds a different view. He interprets "shafaq" as the whiteness that appears after the redness has disappeared.
➌ Interestingly, the distinguished students of Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah—Imam Muhammad and Imam Abu Yusuf rahimahumallah—also understood "shafaq" to mean redness. The current fatwa of the Hanafis is also, for the most part, upon the statement of the two companions (sahibayn).
