Anas (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say, “O Allah! Grant me benefit in what you have taught me, and teach me useful knowledge and provide me with knowledge that will benefit me.” Related by An-Nasa’i and Al-Hakim. At-Tirmidhi reported a similar tradition on the authority of `Abu Hurairah (RAA), he said at its end, “And increase my knowledge. Praise be to Allah in all circumstances. I seek refuge in Allah from the state of those who will go to Hell.” Its chain of narrators is good.

➊ In this hadith, the supplication that is transmitted requests knowledge that is beneficial and advantageous in both this world and the Hereafter.
➋ It does not befit a believer to pray for knowledge that would ruin the Hereafter, because for a believer, success and prosperity in the Hereafter is the fundamental matter.
➌ Beneficial knowledge is that which increases the strength of faith (iman) and creates eagerness to act (upon it).
➍ Requesting worldly sciences is permissible for the improvement and betterment of worldly affairs.
Through this, a person’s faith in Allah will increase; in these sciences as well, the people of faith should have superiority, otherwise, in worldly terms, the dominance and supremacy will belong to the disbelievers.
In this era, this is exactly the situation: non-Muslims have advanced greatly in technology and scientific sciences, and they are the ones who today claim leadership of the world; by virtue of this power, they bring about revolution and change wherever they wish.
The people of Islam should also establish their superiority and excellence in these fields.
