Vocabulary:
«تَعَاظَمَ» is from the form "tafā‘ul," which means the same as "to do" (fi‘l), just as «توانيت» means «ونيت» ("I became exhausted"). The form "tafā‘ul" is used for emphasis, meaning a person who considers himself very great and deems himself more deserving of respect compared to others. Or, "tafā‘ul" is in the meaning of the form "tafa‘‘ul." «تَعَاظَمَ» means «تَعَظَّمَ», i.e., to hold the belief of one's own greatness, as in «تَكَبَّرَ».
«اِخْتَالَ» is from the form "iftial" from «خيلاء», meaning arrogance. Horses are called «خيل» because there is arrogance in their gait. An arrogant person is called "mukhtāl" because he considers himself above others in his own mind.
«غَضْبَانُ» is an intensive form, just like "Rahman," so its translation is "filled with anger."

Benefits:
Greatness and majesty are attributes only of Allah Ta‘ala. The creation does not have this right at all, because even for their own existence they are dependent on Allah; they possess nothing of their own, so how can they claim greatness?
Therefore, it is said:
«إِنَّ اللَّـهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخْتَالًا فَخُورًا» [4-النساء:36]
"Allah Ta‘ala does not love the one who is arrogant and boastful."
So, whoever adopts humility becomes deserving of Allah's mercy, and whoever is arrogant becomes the target of Allah's severe wrath, and contrary to his desire for greatness, he will have to face extreme humiliation. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr radi Allahu anhuma narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«يحشر المتكبرون يوم القيامة امثال الذر فى صور الرجال» [صحيح الترمذي 2025]
"The arrogant will be raised on the Day of Resurrection in the form of tiny ants in the shape of men."

Types of Arrogance:
Arrogance is of two types: one is in the heart—considering oneself great, regarding others as insignificant, and rejecting the truth; and the other is outward arrogance. For example, keeping one's face puffed up, looking at someone from the corner of the eye instead of directly, walking arrogantly, or showing arrogance in clothing, such as letting it hang below the ankles—all these things invite the wrath of Allah. It is said:
« وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا » [31-لقمان:18]
"And do not turn your cheek in contempt toward people, nor walk upon the earth exultantly."

Explanation:
➊ In this hadith, walking with arrogance has been declared a cause of Allah’s displeasure and wrath.
➋ The truth is that this manner of walking is adopted only by those who harbor thoughts of greatness in their minds.
➌ Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has said that arrogance (takabbur) is to consider oneself elevated and to regard others as insignificant, and to reject the truth.
Ibn Hajar Makki rahimahullah has stated in "Az-Zawajir" that self-aggrandizement and arrogance (takabbur) are of two types: one is internal (batin) and the other is external (zahir).
The first sentence of the hadith refers to the internal aspect, and the second sentence refers to the external aspect; both are major sins (kabirah) and are legally (shar'an) forbidden (haram).
In one narration, it is stated that whoever has even a mustard seed’s weight of arrogance (takabbur) in his heart will not enter Paradise.
