Shaykh Abdus Salam Bhutvi
Takhrij:
I did not find this hadith in the index of Tabarani’s “al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat.”
However, in it, within a lengthy narration from Umar radi Allahu anhu, these words are reported from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam:
«من كف غضبه ستر الله عورته»
“Whoever restrains his anger, Allah, the Exalted, will conceal his faults.” [المعجم الاوسط للطبراني حديث 2033]
Shaykh al-Albani, after quoting the narration from Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir in Silsilah Sahihah [906], said (note that the isnad of both al-Awsat and al-Kabir is the same): this isnad is very weak. Then, after detailing its weakness, he said that this hadith has also come with a better chain. Thus, Ibn Abi al-Dunya in “Qada’ al-Hawa’ij” [ص : 80 رقم 36], Abu Ishaq al-Muzakki in “al-Fawa’id al-Muntakhabah” [2/147/1] (part of it), and Ibn Asakir [1/444/11] have narrated it with their chains from Bakr ibn Khunays, who narrated from Abdullah ibn Dinar, who narrated from some of the Companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (in Ibn Abi al-Dunya it is like this), and in the other two books, from Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma. I (al-Albani) say: and these chains are hasan, because Bakr ibn Khunays is truthful (saduq), though he has some mistakes, as Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) has said, and Abdullah ibn Dinar is trustworthy (thiqa), a narrator of al-Bukhari and Muslim, thus the hadith is established. See «والحمد الله»: Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah, hadith [906].
Since this entire hadith is comprehensive of many etiquettes, it is quoted here:
“It is narrated from Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma that a man came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: O Messenger of Allah! Who among the people is most beloved to Allah, and which deed is most beloved to Allah? The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who is most beneficial to people, and the most beloved deed to Allah is to bring happiness to a Muslim, or to remove a hardship from him, or to pay off his debt, or to remove his hunger. And for me to walk with my brother regarding a need is more beloved to me than to perform i‘tikaf in this mosque (the Prophet’s Mosque) for a month. And whoever restrains his anger, Allah will conceal his faults. And whoever swallows his anger while able to act upon it, Allah will fill his heart with hope on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever walks with his brother regarding a need until he secures it for him, Allah will make his feet firm on the Day when feet will slip.” (end quote)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, in Bulugh al-Maram, at this place has mentioned the wording from Anas radi Allahu anhu: «من كف غضبه كف الله عنه عذابه» [كنز العمال 7164], and has cited its reference as «ابن ابي الدنيا فى ذم الغضب ، ابويعلي فى مسنده و ابن شاهين والخرائطي فى مساوي الاخلاق وسعيد بن منصور فى سننه عن انس رضي الله عنه », and its corroborating narration as «من ملك غضبه وقاه الله عذابه ابن ابي الدنيا عن عمر» [كنز العمال7165 ].
A detailed discussion regarding anger has already preceded; see this book’s hadith [1396] and [1406].

Takhrij:
«أخرجه الطبراني في الأوسط كما في مجمع الزاوئد:10 /298، وأبويعلي في مسنده:7 /302، حديث:1583 وسنده ضعيف، وحديث ابن عمر: أخرجه ابن أبي الدنيا في الصمت (21) وسند ضعيف، ضعفه السيوطي، وحسنه العراقي، وللحديث شواهد ضعيفة عند الضياء وغيره.»©Explanation:
➊ The aforementioned narration has been declared weak by our esteemed researcher, whereas Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has graded it as hasan, and he has mentioned its various chains of transmission. Among these, he has graded one chain as hasan. From the words of Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, it appears that the aforementioned narration is at least of the level of hasan. And Allah knows best. For further details, see: (al-Silsilah al-Sahihah by al-Albani: 5/475, 477, no. 2360)
➋ This hadith highlights the virtue of controlling one's anger.
➌ Not becoming angry at the mistakes of one's subordinates and those under one's authority, but rather forgiving them, is a means of being saved from the punishment of Allah, the Exalted.
