Anas (RAA) narrated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Keeping silent is considered as (an act of`) wisdom, but very few practice it.” Related by Al-Baihaqi in his book Shu'ab al-Iman with a weak chain of narrators a he deemed the sound view is that it is traced back to one of the companions who quoted it from Luqman Al-Hakim.

In this narration, remaining silent and keeping one's lips sealed has been described as wisdom, sagacity, and intelligence.
Although this is a saying of Luqman (alayhis salam), there are many ahadith that support silence and condemn idle talk.
Thus, in one hadith it is stated: «مَنْ صَمَتَ نَجَا» "Whoever remained silent has attained salvation."
(Musnad Ahmad: 2/159, 177; and Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Sifat al-Qiyamah, Hadith: 2501) And in another hadith it is stated: «مَنْ کَانَ یُؤمِنُ بِاللّٰہِ وَالْیَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْیَقُلْ خَیْرًا أَوْ لِیَصْمُتْ» "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adab, Hadith: 6018, 6019, 6135, and 6476)
