وعن جابر رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: « لا تذبحوا إلا مسنة إلا أن يعسر عليكم فتذبحوا جذعة من الضأن » رواه مسلم.
Jabir (RAA) narrated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Sacrifice only a full-grown animal unless it is difficult for you, in which case you should sacrifice a (six to ten month old) sheep." Reported by Muslim.

«أخرجه مسلم، الأضاحي، باب سن الأضحية، حديث:1963.»©Explanation:
In this hadith, it is explicitly stated that the sacrifice of a jadha‘ (one-year-old) sheep is only permissible when a thaniyy (two-toothed) animal is not available.
However, the majority opinion is that the sacrifice of a jadha‘ sheep is permissible in any case, whether a thaniyy animal is available or not.
And they have interpreted this hadith as referring to recommendation and superiority, as is the view of Imam Nawawi rahimahullah.
And in light of the evidences, this position appears to be closer to correctness.
Thus, the meaning of this hadith is that it is recommended and superior for you to slaughter a thaniyy animal.
If you are unable and it is not within your means, then you may slaughter a jadha‘ from the sheep species, i.e., a ram or a young male sheep.
As for the jadha‘ of any species other than sheep, it can in no case suffice for sacrifice.
