Abu Hurairah (RAA) narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Do not start by saluting the Jews and the Christians (when you meet them), and if you meet any of them on the road, force him to go to the narrowest part of the road (i.e. do not give them positions of authority among you.)” Related by Muslim.

«أخرجه مسلم، السلام، باب النهي عن ابتداء أهل الكتاب بالسلام...، حديث:2167.»©Explanation:
➊ According to this hadith, it is prohibited and unlawful for a Muslim to greet the Jews, Christians, Magians, and others with salam first. This is the opinion of the majority of the Salaf, but some people, among whom is also included Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma), say that it is permissible to greet the People of the Book first. However, this position is not correct.
➋ If one encounters Jews or Christians on the road, one should not even give way to them.
➌ The purpose of this is to make them feel that they are inferior people and should remain in that state of inferiority. This should not be taken to mean that Islam creates discrimination between human beings. Rather, it is a matter of principle that those who refuse to accept the religion of nature (din al-fitrah) cannot have the same status and rank as those who accept it. Furthermore, in reality, the true human being is the one who is obedient and submissive to his Creator and Master, and who accepts the religion sent by Him, that is, Islam. Otherwise, in outward form he may be from the children of Adam, but inwardly he is even worse than cattle.
