Makhul (RAA) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set up the ballista while attacking the people of at-Ta’if`.’ Related by Abu Dawud with a trustworthy chain of narrators, but it is hadith Mursal. Al-'Uqayli connected it (to the Prophet (ﷺ)) with a weak chain narrated by Ali (ra).

Takhrij:
➊ The aforementioned narration is weak; however, in order to annihilate the enemy, break their strength, and weaken their military power, new methods of warfare and modern weapons and equipment should be employed, and Muslims should strive to invent ever newer implements of war.
➋ In today's era, atomic bombs and other destructive and formidable weapons should also be developed so that the awe and dominance of Muslims over the enemy may be established.
© Narrator of the Hadith:
«حضرت مکحول رحمہ اللہ » was a resident of Damascus and a jurist (faqih) of Syria.
He was among the eminent imams.
Abu Hatim said: "To my knowledge, there has not been a greater jurist in Syria than him."
He passed away in the year 113 Hijri.

Commentary:
Explanation:
1:
Imam Tirmidhi has narrated the hadith regarding the mangonel (manjaniq) through the chain of Waki‘ ibn al-Jarrah.
The purpose of this is that a trustworthy narrator like Waki‘ ibn al-Jarrah has narrated from ‘Umar ibn Harun,
as if the authentication (tauthiq) of ‘Umar ibn Harun is intended.
Note:
(In the chain, “‘Umar ibn Harun Abu Juwayn al-‘Abdi” is a narrator whose hadith is to be abandoned [matruk al-hadith].)
