Abu Aiyub (RAA) narrated that: 'This verse was revealed concerning us (al-Ansar).' He was referring to the verse, “And do not throw yourselves into destruction (2:195). Abu Aiyub said that to answer those who disapproved of the action of those who attacked the Romans till they were amidst their army.’ Related by the three Imams, and At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim graded it as Sahih.

The details of this incident are as follows: Aslam bin Yazid Abu Imran narrates that we were in Constantinople when a large Roman military force came out to confront us. One of the Muslim warriors attacked them and then returned from among them; then he went back again. At this, people began to shout: Subhan Allah! He has thrown himself into destruction.
At this moment, Abu Ayyub radi Allahu anhu said: O people! You are interpreting this verse in this way, whereas this verse was revealed about us—that is, about the group of Ansar: When Allah, the Exalted, granted dominance to His religion and the number of its supporters increased greatly, we began to say secretly to one another that our wealth (homes, livestock, and orchards) had been lost. If we were to remain with our wealth and take care of it, nothing from it would be lost.
So at that time, Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse.
Thus, what is meant by destruction here is our remaining in our homes, which we were intending to do.
