Hadith 1069

وعن عمر رضي الله عنه قال : نزل تحريم الخمر وهي من خمسة : من العنب والتمر والعسل والحنطة والشعير . والخمر ما خامر العقل . متفق عليه.
'Umar (RAA) narrated, 'When the prohibition of Khamr (alcoholic drinks) was revealed, it used to be made from grapes, dates, honey, wheat and barley. Khamr is what shields one's mind' Agreed upon.

➊ In the mentioned hadith, the preparation of wine from five things is described because, in that era, wine was generally made from these very items.
➋ "Khamr"—that is, wine—is that which covers the intellect and overcomes the senses; therefore, anything in which this effect is found is prohibited, whether it is wine prepared from dates, grapes, or any other thing, or any other intoxicating substance.
