Hadith 1068

وعن أنس رضي الله عنه قال : لقد أنزل الله تحريم الخمر وما بالمدينة شراب يشرب إلا من تمر. أخرجه مسلم.
Anas (RAA) narrated, 'Allah sent down the verses stating the prohibition of alcohol when there was no other beverage to drink in Madinah except that prepared from dates (wine of dates).' Related by Muslim.

The purpose and intent of mentioning this hadith is to clarify that not only is wine extracted from grapes prohibited, but any intoxicating drink prepared from any substance is also prohibited if it intoxicates, veils a person’s intellect, and causes him to lose his senses.
In other words, every intoxicating thing is considered wine (khamr).
Whether we call this a linguistic reality or a legal (shar‘i) one, in the view of the Lawgiver (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), it is prohibited.
This is further supported by the forthcoming ahadith.
