Takhrij:
«أخرجه مسلم، الفتن، باب لا تقوم الساعه حتي يمر الرجل بقبر الرجل...، حديث:2916.»©Explanation:
The opinion of the majority of scholars is that ‘Ammar radi Allahu anhu was killed on the day of the Battle of Siffin by the companions of Amir Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu, and thus, by considering the companions of Mu‘awiyah as the referent of "al-fi’ah al-baghiyah" (the rebellious group), they accept that ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu was upon the truth and that Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu committed an ijtihadi error. That is, their fighting against ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu was due to an error in ijtihad, for which, in the sight of Allah, there is reward rather than accountability.

In contrast, the second opinion is that the group of rebels who martyred ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu was the same group that incited the fighting between ‘Ali and Amir Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhuma.

That group of rebels was present in the army of ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu, and ‘Ammar bin Yasir was also present in the army of ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu.

During the battle, it was this same group of rebels—who only wanted to keep the Muslims embroiled with one another—that killed ‘Ammar radi Allahu anhu as well. However, in terms of evidence, the opinion of the majority of scholars appears to be the stronger one.

And Allah knows best.
