Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." They (the people!) asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What are they?" He said, "To join partners in worship with Allah; to practice sorcery; to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law); to eat up usury (Riba), to eat up the property of an orphan; to give one's back to the enemy and fleeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting and to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers."
And Allah the Exalted has said (in Surah An-Nur): "Those who accuse chaste, free women and then do not bring four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes and do not ever accept their testimony thereafter; and they are the wicked. Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." In this Surah it is further stated: "Indeed, those who accuse chaste, unsuspecting, believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment." In this Surah it is said: "And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves—" until the end of the verse.
