Narrated Adi bin Hatim: I asked Allah's Apostle. "We hunt with the help of these hounds." He said, "If you let loose your trained hounds after a game, and mention the name of Allah, then you can eat what the hounds catch for you, even if they killed the game. But you should not eat of it if the hound has eaten of it, for then it is likely that the hound has caught the game for itself. And if other hounds join your hound in hunting the game, then do not eat of it."
And Allah the Exalted has said (in Surah Al-Ma'idah): "They ask you what is lawful for them to eat. Say: Lawful for you are all good things, and what hunting animals and birds of prey catch for you, which you have trained as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you." Up to Allah's saying: "Indeed, Allah is swift in taking account." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: If the dog eats from the game itself, then it has rendered the game impure, because in this case it has withheld the game for itself. And Allah the Exalted has said in this same Surah: "You teach them of what Allah has taught you." Therefore, such a dog should be beaten and trained until it leaves the habit of eating from the game. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) considered such game to be disliked, and Ata said: If the dog only drank the blood of the game and did not eat its flesh, then you may eat it.
