The Book of Commentary
بَابُ: {وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ وَإِنْ يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا} :
(1) Chapter. “...And the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). And if they see a sign, they turn away...” (V.54:1,2)

Hadith 4864
Narrated Ibn Masud: During the lifetime of Allah's Messenger the moon was split into two parts; one part remained over the mountain, and the other part went beyond the mountain. On that, Allah's Messenger said, "Witness this miracle."
Hadith 4865
Narrated `Abdullah: The moon was cleft asunder while we were in the company of the Prophet, and it became two parts. The Prophet said, Witness, witness (this miracle).

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The moon was cleft asunder during the lifetime of the Prophet.
Hadith 4867
Narrated Anas: The people of Mecca asked the Prophet to show them a sign (miracle). So he showed them (the miracle) of the cleaving of the moon.

Narrated Anas: The moon was cleft asunder into two parts.
