Chapter. “...And the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). And if they see a sign, they turn away...” (V.54:1,2)
Mujahid said: The meaning of «مستمر» is "one who passes away," "one who becomes void." «مزدجر» means "one who rebukes excessively," "one who warns." «وازدجر» means "made insane (or rebuked)." «دسر» means "the planks, nails, or ropes of a ship." «لمن كان كفر» means "this punishment was from Allah as a recompense for the one whom they had shown ingratitude to, that is, Nuh." «كل شرب مختضر» means "each group would come to drink water at its turn." «مهطعين الى الداع» Sa'id bin Jubair, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "It means running in fear; in the Arabic language, running is called «لنسلان», «خبب», «سراع.»." Others said that «فتعاطى» means "he struck with his hand, he wounded him." The meaning of «كهشيم المحتظر» is "like a broken, burnt fence." «ازدجر» is the passive past tense from the form «افتعل»; its root is «زجرت»." «جزاء لمن كان كفر» means "the way We treated Nuh and his people was a recompense for what the disbelievers had done to Nuh and his believing companions." «مستقر» means "one who remains steadfast." «عذاب اشر» means "to be arrogant, to show pride."
Narrated Ibn Masud: During the lifetime of Allah's Messenger the moon was split into two parts; one part remained over the mountain, and the other part went beyond the mountain. On that, Allah's Messenger said, "Witness this miracle."

Narrated `Abdullah: The moon was cleft asunder while we were in the company of the Prophet, and it became two parts. The Prophet said, Witness, witness (this miracle).
