بَابُ: {أَلاَ إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ أَلاَ حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ} :

Chapter. “No doubt! They did fold up their breasts, that they may from Him. Surely, even when they cover themselves with their garments, He knows what they conceal and what they reveal. Verily, He is the All- Knower of the (innermost secrets) of the breasts." (V.11:5)

Hadith 4681
وَقَالَ أَبُو مَيْسَرَةَ الْأَوَّاهُ الرَّحِيمُ : بِالْحَبَشِيَّةِ ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : بَادِئَ الرَّأْيِ : مَا ظَهَرَ لَنَا ، وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ : الْجُودِيُّ : جَبَلٌ بِالْجَزِيرَةِ ، وَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ : إِنَّكَ لَأَنْتَ الْحَلِيمُ ، يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ بِهِ ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : أَقْلِعِي : أَمْسِكِي ، عَصِيبٌ : شَدِيدٌ ، لَا جَرَمَ : بَلَى ، وَفَارَ التَّنُّورُ : نَبَعَ الْمَاءُ ، وَقَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ : وَجْهُ الْأَرْضِ .
Abu Maisarah (Amr bin Shurahbil) said: «الأواه » means kind and merciful in the Abyssinian language. And Ibn Abbas said: The meaning of «بادئ الرأي» is what has become apparent to us. And Mujahid said: «جودي» is a mountain on that island which is between the Tigris and Euphrates near Mosul. And Imam Hasan al-Basri said: «إنك لأنت الحليم» was said by the disbelievers to Shu'aib in mockery. And Ibn Abbas said: The meaning of «أقلعي » is "stop." The meaning of «عصيب» is "severe." The meaning of «لا جرم» is "why not" (i.e., it is necessary). The meaning of «وفار التنور» is "water gushed forth." Ikrimah said: «تنور» refers to the surface of the earth.
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَبَّاحٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، قَالَ : قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ : أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقْرَأُ : 0 أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ تَثْنَوْنِي صُدُورُهُمْ 0 ، قَالَ : " سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْهَا " ، فَقَالَ : " أُنَاسٌ كَانُوا يَسْتَحْيُونَ أَنْ يَتَخَلَّوْا ، فَيُفْضُوا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَأَنْ يُجَامِعُوا نِسَاءَهُمْ ، فَيُفْضُوا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَنَزَلَ ذَلِكَ فِيهِمْ " .
Narrated Muhammad bin `Abbas bin Ja`far: That he heard Ibn `Abbas reciting: "No doubt! They fold up their breasts." (11.5) and asked him about its explanation. He said, "Some people used to hide themselves while answering the call of nature in an open space lest they be exposed to the sky, and also when they had sexual relation with their wives in an open space lest they be exposed to the sky, so the above revelation was sent down regarding them."
وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: {وَحَاقَ} نَزَلَ، يَحِيقُ يَنْزِلُ. يَئُوسٌ فَعُولٌ مِنْ يَئِسْتُ. وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: {تَبْتَئِسْ} تَحْزَنْ. {يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ} شَكٌّ وَامْتِرَاءٌ فِي الْحَقِّ. {لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ} مِنَ اللَّهِ إِنِ اسْتَطَاعُوا.
Other people besides ‘Ikrimah have said that the meaning of «حاق» is “descended,” and from this is «يحيق ينزل» “descends.” In «انه ليوس كفور», the meaning of «يوس» is “to despair,” which is on the pattern of «فعول». This is derived from «يئست». And Mujahid said, the meaning of «لا تبتئس» is “do not grieve,” and the meaning of «يثنون صدورهم» is that they doubt the truth. «ليستخفوا منه» means, if possible, they would hide from Allah.

حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، وَأَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَرَأَ : 0 أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ تَثْنَوْنِي صُدُورُهُمْ 0 ، قُلْتُ : " يَا أَبَا الْعَبَّاسِ ، مَا تَثْنَوْنِي صُدُورُهُمْ ؟ قَالَ : كَانَ الرَّجُلُ يُجَامِعُ امْرَأَتَهُ فَيَسْتَحِي ، أَوْ يَتَخَلَّى ، فَيَسْتَحِي ، فَنَزَلَتْ 0 أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ تَثْنَوْنِي صُدُورُهُمْ 0 " .
Narrated Muhammad bin `Abbas bin Ja`far: Ibn `Abbas recited. "No doubt! They fold up their breasts." I said, "O Abu `Abbas! What is meant by "They fold up their breasts?" He said, "A man used to feel shy on having sexual relation with his wife or on answering the call of nature (in an open space) so this Verse was revealed:-- "No doubt! They fold up their breasts."

حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرٌو ، قَالَ : قَرَأَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : أَلا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ أَلا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ سورة هود آية 5 . وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: {يَسْتَغْشُونَ} يُغَطُّونَ رُءُوسَهُمْ {سِيءَ بِهِمْ} سَاءَ ظَنُّهُ بِقَوْمِهِ. {وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ} بِأَضْيَافِهِ {بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ} بِسَوَادٍ. وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: {أُنِيبُ} أَرْجِعُ.
Narrated `Amr: Ibn `Abbas recited:-- "No doubt! They fold up their breasts in order to hide from Him. Surely! Even when they cover themselves with their garments.." (11.5)
