Abu’l-‘Aliyah said: (In Surah al-Baqarah) the word «مطهرة» means that the houris of Paradise will be pure and clean from menstruation, urine, spittle, and all impurities. And regarding the phrase «كلما رزقوا منها من ثمرة رزقا» up to the end of the verse, it means that when a fruit is brought to them and then another fruit, the people of Paradise will say, “This is the same fruit that was given to us before.” The meaning of «متشابها» is that they will be similar in appearance and color, but different in taste. (In Surah al-Haqqah) the word «قطوفها دانية» means that the fruits of Paradise will be so near that the people of Paradise, whether standing or sitting, can pluck them as they wish. The meaning of «دانية» is “near,” «أرائك» means “throne,” Imam Hasan al-Basri said the word «نضرة منه» refers to freshness and the joy of the heart. And Mujahid said «سلسبيلا» means “flowing swiftly,” and the word «غول» means “pain of the belly.” «ينزفون» means that their intellect will not be affected (as happens with worldly wine). And Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: (In Surah an-Naba) the word «دهاقا» means “filled to the brim.” The word «كواعب» means “raised breasts,” the word «رحيق» means “the wine of Paradise,” «تسنيم» is the extract that will be poured over the wine of the people of Paradise; they will drink it. And the word «ختام» (in Surah al-Mutaffifin) means “the clay of the seal” (with which the bottles of wine in Paradise will be sealed). «نضاختان» (in Surah ar-Rahman) means “two gushing springs,” the word «موضونة» (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah) means “ornamented,” and from it comes the word «وضين الناقة.», meaning the saddlecloth of a she-camel, which is also made. And the word «كوب», whose plural is «اكواب» (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah), means a jug without a handle or spout, and the word «لأباريق» is the plural of «ابريق», which is a jug with a handle and spout. And the word «عربا» (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah) is the plural of «عروب», just as «صبور» is the plural of «صبر». The people of Makkah call «عروب» as «عربة», the people of Madinah call it «غنجة», and the people of Iraq call it «شكلة.». By all of these is meant a woman who is passionately in love with her husband. And Mujahid said the word «روح.» (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah) means Paradise and abundance of provision. «ريحان.» (also in the same Surah) means “provision,” and the word «منضود» (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah) means “bananas.” «مخضود» is a berry without thorns, hanging due to the weight of its fruit. Some people say that the word “Arab” (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah) means those women who are beloved to their husbands. «مسكوب» (also in the same Surah) means “flowing water.” And the word «وفرش مرفوعة» (in Surah al-Waqi‘ah) means “high beds,” i.e., beds placed one above another. The word «لغوا» (also in the same Surah) means “falsehood, lies.” The word «تأثيما» (also in the same Surah) also means “lies.” The word «أفنان» (in Surah ar-Rahman) means “branches, twigs,” and «وجنى الجنتين دان» means that due to their freshness and lushness, they will appear black.

'They said, To `Umar bin Al-Khattab.' Then I remembered `Umar's Ghaira (concerning women), and so I quickly went away from that palace." (When `Umar heard this from the Prophet), he wept and said, "Do you think it is likely that I feel Ghaira because of you, O Allah's Apostle?"
