Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "Allah does not take away the knowledge, by taking it away from (the hearts of) the people, but takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when none of the (religious learned men) remains, people will take as their leaders ignorant persons who when consulted will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray."
And (the fifth caliph) Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote to Abu Bakr bin Hazm that whatever hadith of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) you have, examine them and write them down, because I fear the disappearance of religious knowledge and the loss of religious scholars. And do not accept the hadith of anyone except the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and people should spread knowledge and sit together (in gatherings) so that the ignorant may also learn, for knowledge is lost only by being concealed. Alaa bin Abdul Jabbar narrated to us, he said, Abdul Aziz bin Muslim narrated to us from Abdullah bin Dinar, that is, the narration of Umar bin Abdul Aziz up to «ذهاب العلماء».
