Muhammad bin Salam narrated to us, he said: Muhammad bin Hasan al-Wasiti narrated to us, he said: He narrated from ‘Awf, from Hasan al-Basri, he said: There is no objection in reciting before a scholar. And ‘Ubaidullah bin Musa narrated to us, he heard from Sufyan al-Thawri, he used to say: When a person recites a hadith to a muhaddith, there is no objection if he says, “He narrated to me.” And I heard from Abu ‘Asim, he used to mention the statement of Imam Malik and Sufyan al-Thawri that reciting to a scholar and the scholar reciting before his students are both equal.
Narrated Anas bin Malik: While we were sitting with the Prophet in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?" At that time the Prophet was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied, "This white man reclining on his arm." The man then addressed him, "O Son of `Abdul Muttalib." The Prophet said, "I am here to answer your questions." The man said to the Prophet, "I want to ask you something and will be hard in questioning. So do not get angry." The Prophet said, "Ask whatever you want." The man said, "I ask you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who were before you, has Allah sent you as an Apostle to all the mankind?" The Prophet replied, "By Allah, yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to offer five prayers in a day and night (24 hours).? He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah! Has Allah ordered you to observe fasts during this month of the year (i.e. Ramadan)?" He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to take Zakat (obligatory charity) from our rich people and distribute it amongst our poor people?" The Prophet replied, "By Allah, yes." Thereupon that man said, "I have believed in all that with which you have been sent, and I have been sent by my people as a messenger, and I am Dimam bin Tha`laba from the brothers of Bani Sa`d bin Bakr."
And Imam Hasan al-Basri, Sufyan al-Thawri, and Malik have considered it permissible for the student to recite (the lesson). And some have taken the evidence for reciting in front of the teacher from the hadith of Dhamam bin Tha’labah. He asked the Prophet (ﷺ), “Has Allah commanded you that we should perform the prayers?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “Yes.” So this (in effect) is reciting in front of the Prophet (ﷺ). Then Dhamam went and conveyed this to his people, and they considered it permissible. And Imam Malik has taken evidence from the document that is read aloud before the people. He says that so-and-so person made us witnesses to the document, and the reader recites and presents it to the teacher, then says, “So-and-so taught me.”

And Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had copies of the Qur'an written and sent them to various regions. And according to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), Yahya bin Sa'id, and Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), this (writing) is permissible. And some people of Hijaz have deduced from the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding manawalah (handing over a written document), in which he wrote a letter for the commander of the army. Then he said (to the messenger), "Do not read this letter until you reach such-and-such a place." Then, when he reached that place, he read the letter before the people and informed them of the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas: Once Allah's Apostle gave a letter to a person and ordered him to go and deliver it to the Governor of Bahrain. (He did so) and the Governor of Bahrain sent it to Chousroes, who read that letter and then tore it to pieces. (The sub-narrator (Ibn Shihab) thinks that Ibn Al-Musaiyab said that Allah's Apostle invoked Allah against them (saying), "May Allah tear them into pieces, and disperse them all totally.)"
Musa bin Isma'il narrated to us, he said: Sulaiman bin Mughira narrated to us, he said: Thabit narrated from Anas, he said:
We were forbidden in the Noble Qur'an from asking questions to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and for this reason, we liked that some intelligent Bedouin would come and ask the Prophet (ﷺ) about religious matters and we would listen. So once a Bedouin came and said, "O Muhammad (ﷺ)! Your messenger came to us and informed us that Allah has sent you as His Messenger. Is this your claim?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He spoke the truth." Then he asked, "Who created the heavens?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." Then he asked, "Who created the earth and the mountains?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." Then he asked, "Who created the beneficial things in them?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." Then he said, "I ask you by the One who created the earth, the heavens, and the mountains, and created the benefits in them, did Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, send you as His Messenger?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Yes, absolutely true. (Allah has made me His Messenger)." Then he said, "Your messenger told us that five daily prayers and giving zakat from wealth are obligatory upon us. Is this correct?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, he spoke the truth." Then he said, "I ask you by the One who made you His Messenger, did Allah, the Pure, command you with these things?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, absolutely correct." Then he said, "Your envoy claims that whoever among us is able, Hajj to the House of Allah is obligatory upon him." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, he is truthful." Then he said, "I ask you by the One who sent you as a Messenger, did Allah command you with this?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Yes." Then he said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will neither add to these things nor decrease from them. (Rather, I will live my life according to them.)" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If he has spoken the truth in what he said, he will surely, surely enter Paradise." (Note: San'ani said, this hadith is found in this place only in the one manuscript of Bukhari that was read to Farabri, and in no other manuscript.)
