Hadith 979

Al-Hasan bin Muslim told me that Ibn `Abbas had said, "I joined the Prophet, Abu Bakr, `Umar and `Uthman in the `Id ul Fitr prayers. They used to offer the prayer before the Khutba and then they used to deliver the Khutba afterwards. Once the Prophet I came out (for the `Id prayer) as if I were just observing him waving to the people to sit down. He, then accompanied by Bilal, came crossing the rows till he reached the women. He recited the following verse: 'O Prophet! When the believing women come to you to take the oath of fealty to you . . . (to the end of the verse) (60.12).' After finishing the recitation he said, "O ladies! Are you fulfilling your covenant?" None except one woman said, "Yes." Hasan did not know who was that woman. The Prophet said, "Then give alms." Bilal spread his garment and said, "Keep on giving alms. Let my father and mother sacrifice their lives for you (ladies)." So the ladies kept on putting their Fatkhs (big rings) and other kinds of rings in Bilal's garment." `Abdur-Razaq said, " 'Fatkhs' is a big ring which used to be worn in the (Pre-Islamic) period of ignorance.

Hadith Commentary:
Although in the Prophetic era there was no building designated as an Eid ground, and there was no pulpit (minbar) at the place where the Eid prayers were performed, the phrase "falamma faragha nazala" (when he finished, he descended) indicates that there was some elevated place from which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) delivered the sermon.

When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had finished delivering the sermon to the men, the people thought that the sermon was now over and that they should return, so they stood up to leave. However, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stopped them with a gesture of his hand, indicating that they should remain seated, because he was about to deliver a sermon to the women.

From other narrations, it is known that the woman who responded was Asma bint Yazid (radi Allahu anha), who was famous for her eloquence and oratory and was known as "Khatibat an-Nisa" (the orator of the women).

In one of her narrations, it is mentioned that when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came to the women, I was also among them. He said: "O women! You will constitute the majority of the fuel of Hellfire." I called out to him, because I was close to him, "O Messenger of Allah! Why will it be so?" He replied: "Because you frequently curse and are ungrateful to your husbands."

Hadith Commentary:
If women are at a distance and cannot hear the Eid sermon (khutbah) of the imam, even today they may be given a separate admonition, provided there is no fear of any kind of mischief or danger. Nowadays, the loudspeaker has resolved this issue.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that Hazrat Ata’ considered this obligatory. Apart from him, no one else holds it to be obligatory. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has interpreted it as recommended (mustahabb). Most commentators have written that if women, due to being far from the imam, cannot hear the sermon, then the imam should deliver a second sermon in front of the women. However, the Eid sermon is only one, as has already been clarified.

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah also did not use the word “sermon” (khutbah), rather he established the chapter under the title “The Imam’s Admonition” (mau‘izatu’l-imam), the clear meaning of which is that if the imam feels the need, after finishing with the men, he should admonish the women.

And Allah knows best.
