Hadith Commentary:
This is an excerpt from a lengthy hadith which Imam (rahimahullah) himself has included under the chapters of Faith and Vows.
What happened was that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent a Companion named Ibn al-Lutaybah (radi Allahu anhu) to collect zakat. When he brought back the zakat wealth, he remarked regarding some items that these had been given to him as gifts. At that time, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) delivered this sermon after the ‘Isha prayer and explained that during an official journey, you do not have the right to accept personal gifts; whatever is received must all be deposited into the public treasury (bayt al-mal).
