Narrated Tawus: Ibn `Abbas mentioned the statement of the Prophet regarding the taking of a bath on Friday and then I asked him whether the Prophet (p.b.u.h) had ordered perfume or (hair) oil to be used if they could be found in one's house. He (Ibn `Abbas) replied that he did not know about it.

Hadith Commentary:
The hadith of Salman al-Farisi (rahimahullah) regarding oil and perfume has been mentioned above; it is likely that Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was not aware of it.

Hadith Commentary:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, after mentioning the hadith narrated from Salman radi Allahu anhu, has cited the narration of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu to clarify that, apart from the ritual bath (ghusl) on Friday, the rest of the recommended acts—such as applying oil to the hair, using perfume—do not have as much emphasis. However, there is great emphasis on performing the ritual bath (ghusl). Furthermore, these narrations indicate that Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu had some hesitation regarding the use of perfume and similar things, even though in one narration he himself reports from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that if perfume is available, one should use it.
The commentators have given several answers to this:
➊ The narration from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu in which perfume is mentioned is weak.
(Fath al-Bari: 2/480)
➋ It is possible that Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu forgot the narration regarding perfume.
➌ Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu may not have been aware of the hadith of Salman radi Allahu anhu.
➍ Since the perfumes of men and women are different, Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu may not have been fully satisfied regarding the use of perfume, lest men go to the mosque wearing the colorful perfumes of women.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The purpose of ritual bath (ghusl) is to cleanse oneself from dirt and filth so that others are not harmed by one’s sweat; therefore, one should use the tooth-stick (miswak) to remove bad breath from the mouth.
According to Imam Ishaq rahimahullah, Imam Dawud rahimahullah, and Ibn Hazm rahimahullah, using the tooth-stick (miswak) is obligatory for Jumu‘ah (Friday prayer).
In fact, according to Imam Ishaq rahimahullah, using the tooth-stick (miswak) is obligatory for every prayer.
If a person deliberately does not use the tooth-stick (miswak), then his prayer is not valid.
According to Ibn Hazm rahimahullah, using the tooth-stick (miswak) is Sunnah for prayers other than Jumu‘ah, and according to most scholars, whether it is Jumu‘ah or any other prayer, using the tooth-stick (miswak) is Sunnah, not obligatory or compulsory.
