Hadith 838

And Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) considered it preferable that the follower should also say the salam at the same time as the imam says the salam.
Narrated `Itban bin Malik: We prayed with the Prophet and used to finish our prayer with the Taslim along with him.

Hadith Commentary:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s objective in this chapter is that the followers (muqtadis) should not delay in concluding the prayer with salam, but rather, they should also say the salam along with the imam.

Hadith Commentary:
The chapter heading established by Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is derived from the above hadith.
There are several possibilities in this regard:
It may also be intended that after the imam begins the salutation (salam), the follower (muqtadi) should begin his own salutation—that is, the follower may initiate his salam before the imam completes his own salam.
And it is also possible that when the imam completes his salam, only then should the follower begin his own salam. For this reason, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has provided an opportunity for a mujtahid to reflect and deliberate on this matter.
(Fath al-Bari: 2/417)
According to us, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s intent is that the followers should not delay in offering the salam, but rather, following the imam, they should offer the salam along with him.
And Allah knows best.
