Hadith 821

Narrated Thabit: Anas said, "I will leave no stone unturned in making you offer the prayer as I have seen the Prophet making us offer it." Anas used to do a thing which I have not seen you doing. He used to stand after the bowing for such a long time that one would think that he had forgotten (the prostrations) and he used to sit in-between the prostrations so long that one would think that he had forgotten the second prostration.

Hadith Commentary:

The late Hazrat Maulana Waheed uz-Zaman states that our Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah acted upon this, and considered it recommended (mustahabb) to repeatedly say "Rabbighfir li" between the two prostrations (sajdahs), as is mentioned in the hadith of Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu. Hafiz rahimahullah said that from this hadith it is understood that those people with whom Thabit had this conversation perhaps did not sit between the two prostrations, but the one who follows the hadith—when the hadith is authentic—does not care about anyone's opposition.

Hazrat Allamah Shawkani rahimahullah states:
"And people have abandoned this Sunnah which is established by authentic ahadith—whether they are hadith scholars, jurists, mujtahids, or followers (muqallids), all of them appear to be neglectful of this Sunnah. I do not know what excuse they have found for this, and Allah is the One whose help is sought."

Between the two prostrations, this supplication is also Sunnah: "Allahumma ighfir li warhamni wajburni wahdini warzuqni."

Hadith Commentary:
From this narration, it is understood that Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu) used to sit for quite a while between the two prostrations (sujud) during prayer, to the extent that an observer would think perhaps he had forgotten the second prostration.

The student of Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu), Hazrat Thabit, says that this is an action which you people do not perform.

This means that his audience were those who did not sit for long between the two prostrations, but when evidence of a Sunnah is established, the one who acts upon it should not be concerned about the opposition of others.
