Hadith 790

And Abu Humayd narrated before his companions that the Prophet (ﷺ) placed his two hands firmly on his knees during bowing (ruku‘).
Narrated Mus`ab bin Sa`d: I offered prayer beside my father and approximated both my hands and placed them in between the knees. My father told me not to do so and said, "We used to do the same but we were forbidden (by the Prophet) to do it and were ordered to place the hands on the knees."

Hadith Commentary:
It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu) that during bowing (ruku‘), he would join the fingers of both hands and place them between his thighs.
Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah), by bringing this chapter, has indicated that this ruling has been abrogated.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
It is narrated in Sunan al-Darimi that when the sons of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu performed prayer, during the bowing (ruku‘), they placed their hands between their thighs. When Mus‘ab performed prayer in this manner, his father, Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu, struck his hands and then clarified the actual ruling. From this hadith, it is understood that Mus‘ab learned this method of prayer from the sons of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu, and the sons had acquired it from their noble father, Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu.

(2)
Imam al-Tirmidhi rahimahullah writes that the practice of tatbiq (placing the hands between the thighs during ruku‘) has now been abrogated. There is no difference of opinion among the scholars regarding this. Perhaps the abrogation did not reach Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu. It is narrated from Umar radi Allahu anhu that he said: The Sunnah is that during ruku‘, one should grasp the knees with the hands. Some narrations indicate that tatbiq was the practice of the Jews, and in the beginning, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam preferred to conform with the Jews, but later he was prohibited from doing so. (Fath al-Bari: 2/355) It is possible that initially, the act of tatbiq was done in conformity with the Jews, but after the command to differ from them was given, it was prohibited.
