Hadith 788

Narrated `Ikrima: I prayed behind a Sheikh at Mecca and he said twenty two Takbirs (during the prayer). I told Ibn `Abbas that he (i.e. that Sheikh) was foolish. Ibn `Abbas admonished me and said, "This is the tradition of Abul-Qasim."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
There are four transitional takbirs (saying "Allahu Akbar") in each rak‘ah:
When going into bowing (ruku‘), when going into prostration (sajdah), when rising from prostration, and then when going into the second prostration. The fifth is when rising from the second prostration. In four rak‘ahs, this makes twenty takbirs. In this way, including the opening takbir (takbir tahrimah) and the takbir when rising for the third rak‘ah after completing two rak‘ahs, there are twenty-two takbirs in four rak‘ahs.
In the three-rak‘ah prayer of Maghrib, there are seventeen, and in the two-rak‘ah prayer of Fajr, there are eleven.
In the five obligatory prayers of the day, there are a total of ninety-four takbirs.
Since ‘Ikrimah considered an established Sunnah to be non-Sunnah, Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) took serious notice of this in strong words.
(2)
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has, at the end of the hadith, established through the narration of Musa ibn Isma‘il that Qatadah did indeed hear the hadith from ‘Ikrimah.
This was narrated with such care so that no doubt of Qatadah’s tadlis (concealment of the source in transmission) would remain.
