Narrated Shu`ba: Mu'awiya bin Qurra reported that `Abdullah bin Al-Maghaffal Al-Muzani said, "I saw Allah's Apostle on the day of the Conquest of Mecca, riding his she-camel and reciting Surat-al-Fath (48) or part of Surat-al-Fath. He recited it in a vibrating and pleasant voice. Then Mu'awiya recited as `Abdullah bin Mughaffal had done and said, "Were I not afraid that the people would crowd around me, I would surely recite in a vibrating pleasant voice as Ibn Mughaffal did, imitating the Prophet." I asked Muawiya, "How did he recite in that tone?" He said thrice, "A, A , A."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Reciting the words repeatedly, first in a low voice and then in a loud voice, is called tarjī‘ (repetition with modulation). The fact that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited the Qur’an in this manner while sitting on a she-camel was not due to compulsion, but rather, he adopted this style intentionally and by choice as a form of melodious recitation. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited the Qur’an in this manner on occasions other than this as well. Thus, Umm Hani radi Allahu anha states that she once observed the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s manner of reciting the Qur’an. She says, “I was lying on my bed and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was reciting the Qur’an with tarjī‘.” (Asl Sifat as-Salat lil-Albani: 2/568 and Sharh Kitab at-Tawhid lil-Ghunayman: 2/581)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith that adopting tarjī‘ while reciting the Qur’an was a chosen style and action of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would move his tongue and lips, repeatedly modulating his voice in his throat, and would repeat the words of the speech of Allah, the Exalted. In this manner, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam conveyed the speech of his Lord to his Ummah.
The voice was that of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, which is a creation of Allah, and the speech was that of Allah, which is uncreated.

Hadith Commentary: The recitation of the Noble Qur’an is also a form of remembrance of Allah (dhikr), which is necessary according to the verse: ﴿Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides﴾ ( Al Imran: 191).

Hadith Commentary:
From some of the Salaf, a dislike (karahah) regarding reciting (the Qur’an) while mounted (on a riding animal) has been reported. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established this chapter heading to refute them. The commentator of Bukhari, Ibn Battal, has said that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s intent here is to establish that reciting (the Qur’an) while mounted is a Sunnah act, and the basis of this Sunnah is the following statement of Allah, the Exalted:
“Then, when you have mounted firmly on them, remember the favor of your Lord and say:
‘Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves).’”
()
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when he would mount his riding animal, would recite this supplication:
(Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wama kunna lahu muqrinin (13) wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun)
From this it is understood that reciting the Qur’an while mounted is permissible, and its basis is found in the Qur’an itself.
(Sahih Muslim, al-Hajj, Hadith: 3275 (1342), Fath al-Bari: 9/97)

Hadith Commentary:
By repetition, what is meant is to create modulation and variation in the Qur’anic letters, which constitutes a form of beauty in recitation.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
There are two possible explanations for the tarji‘ (modulation) in the recitation of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as follows:
➊
Since you were mounted on a she-camel and it was swift, due to its speed, tarji‘ was perceived in your voice.
➋
At the place of madd (elongation), when you would stretch the letters of madd, tarji‘ would become apparent, and you would do so intentionally.
In one narration, its manner has been described, that is, a-a-a: an open hamzah, then an alif, then an open hamzah.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Tawhid, Hadith: 7540)
2.
Apart from while riding, your recitation with tarji‘ is also established, as narrated from Umm Hani radi Allahu anha, who said: I was lying on my bed when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was reciting the Qur’an with tarji‘.
(Fath al-Bari: 9/115)

Hadith Commentary:
1.
To recite a word first softly and then aloud is called tarjī‘ (repetition with modulation).
The narrator of the hadith, Mu‘āwiyah ibn Qurrah, recited a little in the tone of ‘Abdullāh ibn Mughaffal radi Allahu anhu, and then explained as mentioned in the hadith. Thus, in one narration it is stated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited this surah in a gentle tone.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada’il al-Qur’an, Hadith: 5047. )
In some narrations, there is further detail and clarification of the vocal method.
Shu‘bah states that then Mu‘āwiyah ibn Qurrah recited in the tone of Ibn Mughaffal radi Allahu anhu and said:
“If I did not fear that people would crowd around, I would recite to you with tarjī‘.”
Shu‘bah says: I asked Mu‘āwiyah, “What is tarjī‘?” He replied that the voice is modulated in the throat three times.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Tawhid, Hadith: 7540. )
2.
It should be noted that this tarjī‘ was not due to being mounted (on a riding animal) and thus involuntary, but rather the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited it by his own choice.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
"Tarji'" refers to modulating the voice in the throat, as melodious reciters do. The fact that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited the Qur'an in this manner was not due to compulsion from sitting on the she-camel, but rather, he adopted this style intentionally and by choice as a form of melodious recitation. This is because, in one narration, it is mentioned that he was reciting the Noble Qur'an with great gentleness.
(: Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada'il al-Qur'an, Hadith: 5047)
➋
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited the Noble Qur'an in this manner on occasions other than this as well. In another narration, someone asked: "How did he perform tarji'?" It was explained that he would repeat the sound "Aaa" three times, elongating the voice each time.
(: Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Tawhid, Hadith: 7540)
Included in reciting in this manner were also feelings of joy, because he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was entering Makkah Mukarramah in a victorious manner.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: "Tarji'" refers to repetition or reiteration. Since the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was on a mount, there would be modulation in the voice; due to the movement of the mount, a tremor would occur in the voice, which increases the beauty of the sound, and the listener experiences pleasure and delight. A unique state was produced by the voice and tarji' of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

1467. English Commentary: In an authentic hadith, it is mentioned that Junab Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah recited the Qur'an in the manner of the recitation of Abdullah bin Mughaffal radi Allahu anhu. He said, "If I did not fear that people would gather (in crowds), I would have recited to you the recitation of Sayyiduna Ibn Mughaffal radi Allahu anhu, which he recited to me from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam." Shu'bah says: I asked, "How was his tarji’ (modulation)?" He replied: "Aaa, aaa, aaa," three times. [صحیح بخاری، التوحید، حدیث: 7540]
Tarji’ refers to returning the voice to the throat and raising it, so that the melody becomes pleasant. It is thus understood that reciting the Qur'an with tarji’ (modulation) and a beautiful melody is recommended and desirable.
