Hadith 7508

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْغَافِرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، " أَنَّهُ ذَكَرَ رَجُلًا فِيمَنْ سَلَفَ أَوْ فِيمَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ ، قَالَ : كَلِمَةً يَعْنِي أَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتِ الْوَفَاةُ ، قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ : أَيَّ أَبٍ كُنْتُ لَكُمْ ؟ ، قَالُوا : خَيْرَ أَبٍ ، قَالَ : فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَبْتَئِرْ أَوْ لَمْ يَبْتَئِزْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرًا وَإِنْ يَقْدِرِ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ يُعَذِّبْهُ ، فَانْظُرُوا إِذَا مُتُّ ، فَأَحْرِقُونِي حَتَّى إِذَا صِرْتُ فَحْمًا ، فَاسْحَقُونِي ، أَوْ قَالَ فَاسْتَحِلُونِي فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ رِيحٍ عَاصِفٍ فَأَذْرُونِي فِيهَا ، فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَأَخَذَ مَوَاثِيقَهُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَرَبِّي ، فَفَعَلُوا ثُمَّ أَذْرَوْهُ فِي يَوْمٍ عَاصِفٍ ، فَقَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : كُنْ فَإِذَا هُوَ رَجُلٌ قَائِمٌ ، قَالَ اللَّهُ : أَيْ عَبْدِي مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى أَنْ فَعَلْتَ مَا فَعَلْتَ ، قَالَ : مَخَافَتُكَ أَوْ فَرَقٌ مِنْكَ ، قَالَ : فَمَا تَلَافَاهُ أَنْ رَحِمَهُ عِنْدَهَا ، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى : فَمَا تَلَافَاهُ غَيْرُهَا " ، فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْ سَلْمَانَ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ زَادَ فِيهِ أَذْرُونِي فِي الْبَحْرِ أَوْ كَمَا حَدَّثَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ ، وَقَالَ : لَمْ يَبْتَئِرْ ، وَقَالَ خَلِيفَةُ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ وَقَالَ لَمْ يَبْتَئِزْ ، فَسَّرَهُ قَتَادَةُ لَمْ يَدَّخِرْ .
Narrated Abu Sa`id: The Prophet mentioned a man from the people of the past or those who preceded you. The Prophet said a sentence meaning: Allah had given him wealth and children. When his death approached, he said to his sons, "What kind of father have I been to you?" They replied, "You have been a good father." He told them that he had not presented any good deed before Allah, and if Allah should get hold of him He would punish him.' "So look!" he added, "When I die, burn me, and when I turn into coal, crush me, and when there comes a windy day, scatter my ashes in the wind." The Prophet added, "Then by Allah, he took a firm promise from his children to do so, and they did so. (They burnt him after his death) and threw his ashes on a windy day. Then Allah commanded to his ashes. "Be," and behold! He became a man standing! Allah said, "O My slave! What made you do what you did?" He replied, "For fear of You." Nothing saved him then but Allah's Mercy (So Allah forgave him).

Hadith Commentary:
Allah said to this sinful servant: “O servant! Why did you do this deed?”
From this, the meaning of the chapter is derived: that Allah’s speaking is true. Those who deny the speech of Allah are in fact deniers of the clear verses and Prophetic hadiths.
May Allah guide them.
The narrators have transmitted the word as “yabta’ir” or “lam yabta’iz” with both the letter ra (ر) and the letter za (ز).
Some have narrated it with ra, and some with za.
The meaning refers to both of the eminent Ansar.
They are counted among the memorizers of hadith.
He passed away at the age of 84 in the year 74 AH.
He was buried in Baqi’ al-Gharqad.
Radi Allahu anhu wa ardah. Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:

It is necessary to have faith regarding Allah, the Exalted, that He is fully capable over everything. However, according to the mentioned hadith, the deceased had doubt regarding Allah’s power, thinking that by this action he would escape Allah’s grasp. Since he undertook this action out of fear of Allah, the mercy of Allah encompassed him and Allah, the Exalted, forgave him.


According to this hadith, Allah, the Exalted, said to this sinful servant: “O My servant! Why did you undertake this action?” Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this that Allah’s speech is true, and those who deny the speech of Allah are deniers of clear verses and explicit ahadith. (May Allah guide them)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, it is mentioned that the person was a grave-robber (kafan-chor).
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Ahadith al-Anbiya, Hadith: 3452)
He committed this act because if he were buried in his original state, people would recognize him upon resurrection on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, when he was burned to ashes and his remains were either scattered in water or blown away in the air, he thought people would not be able to recognize him. However, the poor man was ignorant of the majesty of Allah and His attributes, and his deeds were not good either. Yet, before dying, such fear of Allah (khawf Allah) overcame him that he made an ignorant bequest to his sons.
He thought that after his ashes were thus dispersed over land and sea, there would be no possibility of his being resurrected.
But since the motive and cause of this ignorant mistake was the fear of Allah and dread of His punishment, Allah, the Exalted, forgave him.

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith the value and importance of the fear of Allah, that even this ignorant person was forgiven because of his fear of Allah.
