Hadith Commentary:

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s intent is that, in the pursuit of knowledge, while the effort of the student is necessary, turning to Allah is even more essential.
Without this, achieving the objective is difficult.
In acquiring knowledge, a person should not rely on his own intelligence and cleverness; rather, this is a divine gift and impossible without His grace.
His grace is attained through the supplication of the righteous, so it is necessary for the student to be present in the service of the elders and to fulfill their instructions with complete etiquette and respect.

There are two incidents found in the books of hadith regarding the special affection that Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma received from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. One of these relates to service, while the other concerns the observance of the Messenger of Allah’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam etiquette and respect.

Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma was at the house of his maternal aunt Maymunah radi Allahu anha when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to the lavatory to relieve himself.
Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, as an act of service, prepared water for your convenience.
When you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned, you inquired who had placed the water. It was found that Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma had performed this service, and you were pleased and made the aforementioned supplication.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Wudu, Hadith: 143)

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma stand next to him on his right side during the night prayer (tahajjud).
Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma stepped back.
You sallallahu alayhi wa sallam again made him stand next to you.
He again stepped back. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“What is the matter with you? I keep making you stand next to me and you keep stepping back?” Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma replied:
“It is not appropriate for anyone to stand next to you while you are the Messenger of Allah, and standing equal to the Messenger is disrespectful.”
You sallallahu alayhi wa sallam were pleased with this answer and made supplication for him.
(Musnad Ahmad: 1/330, and al-Sahihah of al-Albani, Hadith: 606)
From these incidents, it is understood that serving the elders and showing them etiquette and respect is a means of attaining their supplications.

Hadith Commentary:
The effect of the supplication of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was that Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) became one of the great scholars of the Ummah; especially in the knowledge of Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), he had no equal.

Hadith Commentary:

Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu was very devoted in service. Once, when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to relieve himself, Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu arranged water and other necessities.
When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw the water, he asked:
"Who placed this?" He was informed that Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu had made this arrangement, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave him abundant supplications.
In one narration, he said:
"O Allah! Grant him understanding of the religion." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Ablution, Hadith: 143)
In another narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam embraced him to his blessed chest and supplicated:
"O Allah! Teach him wisdom and understanding." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Hadith: 3756)
At the end of the aforementioned hadith, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah defined "wisdom" with these words:
"Correct judgment that is other than prophethood."

The effect of the supplications of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was that Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu became a great scholar of this Ummah, 'Hibr al-Ummah' (the learned one of the Ummah).
Especially in the knowledge of tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), he had no equal.
Allamah Ayni rahimahullah writes:
"The purpose of giving supplications was that he should learn the Book and the Sunnah, hold firmly to them, and act according to them.
This is also the intent of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah."
