Hadith 7383

And He said: "O Messenger! Your Lord is Most Mighty, free from what these disbelievers attribute." And He said: "Honor belongs only to Allah and His Messenger." And if someone swears by Allah's honor or by His other attributes, then the oath is binding. And Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When Allah places His foot in it, the Hellfire will say «قط قط»: "Enough, enough, by Your honor!" And Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that a man will remain between Paradise and Hell, being the last of the people of Hell to enter Paradise, and he will say: "O Lord! Turn my face away from the Fire, by Your honor, I ask for nothing else." Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: 'For you is this and ten times as much.'" And Ayyub (peace be upon him) prayed: "By Your honor! Can I ever be independent of Your favor and generosity?"
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet used to say, "I seek refuge (with YOU) by Your 'Izzat, None has the right to be worshipped but You Who does not die while the Jinns and the human beings die."

Hadith Commentary:

To flee from something frightening and seek refuge with a savior is called "‘awdh" (seeking refuge), whereas striving in search of good is called "lawdh." The reality of seeking refuge (isti‘adhah) is precisely this: to seek Allah’s protection from the evil of every evildoer. It was the frequent noble habit of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to seek refuge with the Lord of Might, and when seeking refuge, he would refer to Allah’s attribute of Might (‘izzah). Seeking refuge by means of Allah’s attributes is worship—indeed, it is the best form of worship—because in doing so, one is fulfilling the following command of Allah:
“And the most beautiful names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them.” ()

To seek refuge by means of Allah’s attributes is also akin to swearing an oath by them. The purpose of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is to affirm the attribute of Might (‘izzah) for Allah. This hadith is clear evidence of that.
