Narrated Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman that he heard Mu'awiya talking to a group of people from Quraish at Al-Madina, and on mentioning Ka'b Al-Ashbar, he said, "He was one of the most truthful of those who used to talk about the people of the Scripture, yet we used to detect certain faults in his information."

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Ka‘b al-Ahbar was among the scholars and distinguished individuals of the People of the Book. He accepted Islam during the era of ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu and is counted among the eminent Tabi‘in.
According to the statement of Amir Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu, Ka‘b al-Ahbar was the most truthful among the People of the Book. However, when he would narrate any report concerning the People of the Book, he would sometimes make mistakes, because the Jewish scholars had made many alterations in the Torah and other scriptures. Therefore, he would sometimes narrate altered reports, and thus the information he conveyed would be false.
He did not deliberately lie.
In such circumstances, what benefit is there in asking the People of the Book?
➋
Some modern-minded Muslims of the present era only accept those hadiths which are confirmed by Western civilization, modern science, or English medicine.
What benefit is there in such confirmation? The demand of faith is that whatever is established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam should be accepted immediately and one should strive to act upon it.
