Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
➊
Siffin is the name of a place on the right bank of the Euphrates River between Raqqah and Baalis in Syria, where a great battle took place between Ali radi Allahu anhu and Muawiyah, in which thousands of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in were martyred. The day of Abu Jandal refers to the day of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
➋
People accused Sahl ibn Hunayf radi Allahu anhu of negligence for not participating in the Battle of Siffin, and these remarks were very burdensome for him.
He said:
I did not fall short in participating in this battle, nor is it my habit to commit any kind of negligence when needed. When Abu Jandal radi Allahu anhu came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as a Muslim at the time of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, according to the terms of the treaty, returned him to the polytheists, even then this matter was very hard for me.
At that time, we were in such a position that if we had not returned Abu Jandal, the polytheists could not have harmed us in any way. But we gave precedence to the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and endured the return of Abu Jandal radi Allahu anhu, because the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had commanded it, and we did not have the power to reject the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In this situation as well, I am not guilty of negligence.
Therefore, instead of accusing me of negligence, you should reflect upon yourselves.
Accordingly, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith that acting merely on opinion in religious matters is not a commendable action.
➌
In some copies of Sahih Bukhari, there is an additional phrase, the meaning of which is that in every issue, unless there is evidence from the Book and the Sunnah, do not consider the matter correct based on your own opinion, nor give a legal verdict (fatwa) according to opinion. Rather, reflect upon the Book and the Sunnah and establish the ruling of the issue from them.
In any case, according to the noble hadith scholars rahimahullah, what is meant is the blameworthy opinion: that a person leaves the Book and the Sunnah and acts according to his own opinion.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
