Hadith 7306

The statement regarding this is that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Narrated `Asim: I said to Anas, "Did Allah's Apostle make Medina a sanctuary?" He replied, "Yes, (Medina is a sanctuary from such-and-such place to such-and-such place. It is forbidden to cut its trees, and whoever innovates an heresy in it or commits a sin therein, will incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people." Then Musa bin Anas told me that Anas added, "..... or gives refuge to such an heretic or a sinner..."

Hadith Commentary:
God forbid, observe how much the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam detested innovation (bid‘ah), that he said: whoever gives shelter or a place to an innovator (bid‘ati), upon him too is the curse. O Muslims! Reflect upon the statement of your Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam—keep away from innovation and from the company of innovators, and always remain lovers of the Prophetic Sunnah and of those who follow the Sunnah.

If there is a difference of opinion regarding whether a particular act is a good or bad innovation (bid‘ah hasanah or sayyi’ah), such as gatherings for the Prophet’s birthday (mawlid) or standing (qiyam) and the like, then it is better to avoid these as well, because performing them is not obligatory, and abstaining from them is an act of caution.

O Muslims! You turn towards innovation—this is your ignorance. If you desire reward in the Hereafter, then act upon even a minor Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, such as lying down for a short while after the Sunnah prayer of Fajr; in this, you will receive more reward than in a thousand mawlid gatherings.

Hadith Commentary:

Although giving shelter to the people of sin is considered participating in their sin, because whoever is pleased with someone’s action is counted among them, yet Madinah Tayyibah has been singled out with this warning because this city is the place where revelation descended and it is the beloved homeland of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
It is from here that the religion spread.
Therefore, Madinah Tayyibah has superiority over all other cities.

This hadith shows how much the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) detested innovation (bid‘ah).
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
Whoever gives shelter to an innovator (mubtadi‘), upon him is the curse.
Therefore, we should remain distant from innovation (bid‘ah) and the people of innovation.
Wallahu al-musta‘an (And Allah is the One whose help is sought).
