Hadith 7298

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet wore a gold ring and then the people followed him and wore gold rings too. Then the Prophet said, "I had this golden ring made for myself. He then threw it away and said, "I shall never put it on." Thereupon the people also threw their rings away.

Hadith Commentary:

Later, gold rings were declared unlawful (haram) for men, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and all the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum abandoned gold rings. For women, this is lawful (halal).

Hadith Commentary:

In a narration from Anas radi Allahu anhu, it is reported that one day I saw a silver ring in the hand of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and when people saw this, they had silver rings made and began to wear them. Then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam discarded that ring.
Upon seeing this, the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in also discarded their rings.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 5888)

In this narration, one of the narrators has made an error, because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had discarded a gold ring.
After that, he had a silver ring made, which he continued to wear throughout his life.
After the passing of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu wore it, then ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu wore it.
After that, ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu used it until it fell from him into the well of Aris.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 5866)
Gold was forbidden for men, therefore the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not use it.
Following the example of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in also abandoned its use; however, for women its use is permissible and lawful.

In any case, following the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in every matter is a part of faith.
Allah the Exalted has said:
“Indeed, there is for you in the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) an excellent example.”
(al-Ahzab 33:21)
In terms of context, this verse has a specific meaning, but in terms of meaning it is general, i.e., in every aspect of life the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is a necessary example to follow. However, following this example is granted to the one who possesses three qualities:
©.
He has faith in Allah the Exalted.
©.
He has certainty in the Hereafter.
©.
He remembers Allah the Exalted abundantly.
The clarification of these conditions is mentioned at the end of the aforementioned verse.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
