Hadith 7286

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas: Uyaina bin Hisn bin Hudhaifa bin Badr came and stayed (at Medina) with his nephew Al-Hurr bin Qais bin Hisn who has one of those whom `Umar used to keep near him, as the Qurra' (learned men knowing Qur'an by heart) were the people of `Umar's meetings and his advisors whether they were old or young. 'Uyaina said to his nephew, "O my nephew! Have you an approach to this chief so as to get for me the permission to see him?" His nephew said, "I will get the permission for you to see him." (Ibn `Abbas added: ) So he took the permission for 'Uyaina, and when the latter entered, he said, "O the son of Al-Khattab! By Allah, you neither give us sufficient provision nor judge among us with justice." On that `Umar became so furious that he intended to harm him. Al-Hurr, said, "O Chief of the Believers!" Allah said to His Apostle 'Hold to forgiveness, command what is good (right), and leave the foolish (i.e. do not punish them).' (7.199) and this person is among the foolish." By Allah, `Umar did not overlook that Verse when Al-Hurr recited it before him, and `Umar said to observe (the orders of) Allah's Book strictly." (See Hadith No. 166, Vol. 6)

Hadith Commentary:
This ‘Uyainah bin Hisn became Muslim during the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but after the death of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when Tulayhah al-Asadi claimed prophethood, ‘Uyainah also joined his followers.
During the caliphate of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, when the Muslims attacked Tulayhah, he fled, but ‘Uyainah was captured.
He was brought to Madinah.
Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu said to him, “Repent.”
He repented.
Subhan Allah! The value of knowledge is recognized when kings and leaders keep scholars close to them.
Knowledge is such a thing that whether it is found in a young person or an old one, it always brings superiority.
A young scholar is far higher in rank and status than a hundred-year-old unfortunate ignorant brute.
Among the many virtues gathered in Umar radi Allahu anhu was also, to the highest degree, the appreciation of knowledge.
Subhan Allah! The caliphate is deserved by those who are such followers and obedient servants of the Qur’an and Hadith.
Now, these ignorant people should be asked: ‘Uyainah bin Hisn was your own brother, so why did he behave so rudely? If he had even a little knowledge, he would not have uttered such disrespectful words.
It was because of Har bin Qays, who was a scholar, that his honor was saved; otherwise, at the hands of Umar radi Allahu anhu, he would have been beaten so severely that he would have remembered his mother’s milk.

Hadith Commentary:

Hazrat Umar Farooq radi Allahu anhu was one who would stop at the Book of Allah, meaning he would immediately act upon the commands of Allah’s Book. And whoever acts upon the Book of Allah is the one who truly follows the way of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

From this hadith, the value and esteem of knowledge and the people of knowledge is evident; this is realized when kings and rulers consult them and give them a place in their presence. The advisors of Amir al-Mu’minin Hazrat Umar Farooq radi Allahu anhu were also scholars, reciters (qurra’), and pious, devout elderly and young men. Knowledge is the one thing that creates superiority among the old and the young.

There was no doorkeeper at the time of Hazrat Umar radi Allahu anhu’s gatherings. There was no need to seek permission to enter his assembly; however, when he was alone and it was his time of rest, then permission was required to approach him. That is why ‘Uyainah had to seek permission to meet him in solitude, but he disregarded etiquette and respect, and upon entering, began speaking with, “O son of Khattab!” This was a sign of his hardness of heart (qasawat qalbi) and ignorance of the status and rank of elders. If he had knowledge, he would not have committed such insolence and rudeness, nor would he have uttered disrespectful words. If Hazrat Har bin Qais radi Allahu anhu had not intervened, he would have received such a punishment that he would have remembered it for the rest of his life.

In any case, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has, through this hadith, established the importance and benefit of the ways of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, which is an undeniable reality in its own right. And Allah knows best.
