And the statement of Allah the Exalted (in Surah Al-Furqan) «واجعلنا للمتقين إماما»: "Our Lord! Make us leaders for the righteous." Mujahid said: That is, make us imams so that we follow those who came before us, the Companions and the Followers, and those who come after us follow us. And Abdullah bin Awn said: There are three things which I like for myself and for my Muslim brothers: First, the knowledge of hadith; Muslims must acquire it. Second, the Noble Qur'an; they should recite it with understanding and continue to seek the meanings of the Qur'an from people. Third, that Muslims should always mention each other with goodness and virtue, and not mention anyone's faults.

Narrated Abu Wail: I sat with Shaiba in this Mosque (Al-Masjid-Al-Haram), and he said, "`Umar once sat beside me here as you are now sitting, and said, 'I feel like distributing all the gold and silver that are in it (i.e., the Ka`ba) among the Muslims'. I said, 'You cannot do that.' `Umar said, 'Why?' I said, 'Your two (previous) companions (the Prophet and Abu Bakr) did not do it. `Umar said, 'They are the two persons whom one must follow.'" Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
1.
Hazrat Thaybah bin Uthman radi Allahu anhu was sitting on a chair near the door inside the Ka'bah, when Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah came and sat with him. Then, as the conversation progressed, Hazrat Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu said:
I follow the example of these two elders.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Hajj, Hadith: 1594)
From this hadith, it is understood that it is necessary to follow both the actions and the abstentions of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
2.
When Hazrat Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu intended to distribute the gold and silver of the Ka'bah among the Muslims for their welfare, the gatekeeper of the Ka'bah, Hazrat Thaybah bin Uthman radi Allahu anhu, referred to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Hazrat Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, stating that they had not done so. Thus, Hazrat Umar radi Allahu anhu found no room to oppose them. It is as if, in his view, following these elders was obligatory, because it is possible that the walls of the House of Allah may collapse or require repair, and this wealth could be spent for that need. However, if it is spent on the general needs of the Muslims, then the specified wealth will not be available for the purpose for which it was kept. Therefore, it is not permissible to spend the wealth of the Ka'bah on the general needs and interests of the people.
