Narrated Anas bin Malik: That he heard `Umar speaking while standing on the pulpit of the Prophet in the morning (following the death of the Prophet), when the people had sworn allegiance to Abu Bakr. He said the Tashah-hud before Abu Bakr, and said, "Amma Ba'du (then after) Allah has chosen for his Apostle what is with Him (Paradise) rather than what is with you (the world). This is that Book (Qur'an) with which Allah guided your Apostle, so stick to it, for then you will be guided on the right path as Allah guided His Apostle with it."

Hadith Commentary:
If you abandon the Qur’an, you will go astray.
The meaning of the Qur’an is clarified by the Hadith, so the Qur’an and Hadith are the true foundations of the religion.
It is necessary for every Muslim to hold fast to both of them—that is, to understand them and to have belief and actions in accordance with them. Whoever’s belief or action is not in accordance with the Qur’an and Hadith can never be a friend (wali) of Allah or a close servant. And the more a person follows the Qur’an and Hadith, the higher his rank in sainthood (wilayah).
O Muslims! Understand well that death stands over your head, and it is certain that you will be presented before your Lord and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the Hereafter. Do not let it be that you are disgraced there, for the shame of that moment will be of no benefit.
See, it is only the following of the Qur’an and Hadith that will grant you salvation and is an excellent document for your protection.
All other things are mere pretenses.
Unveilings (kashf) and miracles (karamat), contemplation of the shaykh (tasawwur shaykh), the ecstatic utterances of dervishes (shathiyyat), and other superstitions such as states, sayings, vows, festivals, fairs, illuminations, and sandal ceremonies—none of these things will be of any use.
A person saw Hazrat Junayd (rahimahullah), who was the leader of the saints (awliya), in a dream and asked, “What transpired?” He replied, “All those realities and subtleties of dervishhood, and the fine points and delicacies of poverty (faqr), passed away and were of no use.
It was only a few units (rak‘at) of the night prayer (tahajjud) that we used to perform near dawn (in accordance with the Sunnah) that saved us.”
O Allah! Make us steadfast upon the Qur’an and Hadith, and protect us from satanic sciences and whisperings. Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In another narration, there is further clarification that on the day after the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) delivered a sermon while Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) remained silent and did not speak. He said:
We wished that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would remain alive among us and that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would meet Allah after our deaths, but the decision of Allah is true.
Even the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) found the path of guidance through this.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Ahkam, Hadith 7219)
➋
This means that if people abandon the Qur’an, they will go astray, and the meaning of the Qur’an becomes clear and evident through the hadith. Thus, the Qur’an and hadith are the true foundation of the religion.
Every Muslim should firmly hold to both and act according to them.
Whoever’s belief or action is not in accordance with the Qur’an and hadith will never attain the path of salvation.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) wants to establish through this hadith that the Book and the Sunnah are the true foundation of the religion, and a Muslim should live his life according to them.
