Narrated Tariq bin Shihab: A Jew said to `Umar, "O Chief of the Believers, if this verse: 'This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favors upon you, and have chosen for you, Islam as your religion.' (5.3) had been revealed upon us, we would have taken that day as an `Id (festival) day." `Umar said, "I know definitely on what day this Verse was revealed; it was revealed on the day of `Arafat, on a Friday."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Husayn Memon
Chapter of Sahih Bukhari Hadith Number: 7268: «
Relevance between the Chapter and the Hadith:
The chapter discusses holding firmly to the Book and the Sunnah, while under the chapter heading, the completion of the religion of Islam is mentioned. The connection and relevance between the two are highlighted here.
Allamah Abdul Haq al-Hashimi rahimahullah says:
“That is, the context of the hadith and the noble verse indicate that this Ummah of Muhammad is holding fast to the Book and the Sunnah, because Allah, the Exalted, has bestowed His favor upon the Ummah of Muhammad by completing the religion for them and perfecting His blessing upon them, and He has chosen Islam for them.”
Allamah Kirmani rahimahullah writes:
“This chapter heading is derived from this verse: «﴿وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللّٰهِ جَمِيعًا﴾» [آل عمران : 103] because by ‘rope’ (habl) is meant both the Book and the Sunnah, and this is metaphorical, as the common factor between the two is that both are a means to the intended objective.”
According to Allamah Kirmani rahimahullah, the chapter is actually related to the blessed verse: «﴿وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللّٰهِ جَمِيعًا﴾» [آل عمران : 103], and by ‘rope’ (habl) is meant the Qur’an and the Hadith. Therefore, the chapter heading, which is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, mentions the religion of Islam, and the religion of Islam is precisely that which is called the Qur’an and the Hadith. Thus, the aspect of relevance here becomes clearly evident.

Hadith Commentary:
So on that day, the Muslims had two festivals: ‘Arafah and Jumu‘ah, and coincidentally, the festivals of the Jews, Christians, and Magians also fell on the same day.
Such a thing had never happened before.
In the wording "sami‘a Sufyan," Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has explicitly mentioned hearing (sama‘).
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter is as follows: Allah the Exalted has reminded the Ummah of Muhammad of His favor in this verse, that "Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you."
This will only be the case when the Ummah remains steadfast upon the commands of the Messenger.
They must continue to follow the Qur’an and Hadith.
It is also evident from this that at the time of the revelation of the verse, Islam was completed; later, the blindly imitated schools (taqlidi madhahib), by adding to Islam through blind following (taqlid), made a mockery of the completion of Islam without taqlid.
Alas!

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The meaning of what Umar radi Allahu anhu said in response to the Jew is that for us, that day is indeed counted as a festival, meaning that Friday is the weekly festival (‘Eid) for Muslims.
➋
After the revelation of this verse, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam lived for approximately eighty (80) days.
Indeed, at that time, the principles and pillars of Islam had been completed, and according to Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, the implication of the verse is that this blessed Ummah has firmly adhered to the Book and the Sunnah, because Allah, through this noble verse, has bestowed a favor upon this Ummah by perfecting their religion, completing His favor upon them, and expressing His pleasure with Islam as their religion.
(‘Umdat al-Qari: 16/498)
➌
The aforementioned noble verse appears as a parenthetical statement amidst the mention of prohibitions, the purpose of which is to clarify that the consumption of these prohibited things is sinful (fisq) and unlawful (haram), and that the prohibition of these items is a part of the perfection of the religion and the completion of Allah’s favor.
By “religion” is meant all the principles, rulings, and guidance of the Shari‘ah, which means that after this, Muslims have no need to import any principle into Islam from outside, whether it pertains to social, economic, or political aspects of life.
In this regard, there is no room in Islam for Western democracy, socialism, communism, or any other “ism.”
The same applies to innovations (bid‘ah) and newly invented matters (muhdathat).
In this respect, the greatest blessing upon Muslims is that Allah has granted them such comprehensive guidance that, by it, their worldly life becomes successful and pleasant, and by acting upon it, salvation in the Hereafter is also assured.
And Allah knows best.
